How did you get into DE/Straight shaving

bought some stuff on mankind, looked at the shaving stuff there also - got a MenU 'mini' pack from there. Was also getting fed up with the cost of cartridges, and so purchased a HD and some Proraso from the shack, and have never looked back since. Watching Mantic videos definitely assisted in my decision to try DE shaving.

I started as follows:

While shaving with Sensor/Excel/Mach 3/Fusion for years, I bought a Futur, a Dovo straight and a couple of nice brushes some years back. I had no clue of course about proper (DE) wet shaving, and as a result I was using the Futur on setting 5, with wrong technique and occasionally with canned gels. The outcome was neck irritation, leading me to go back to my cartridges all the time.

For some strange reason I saw Taylor's shaving cremes and after shaves in Amazon.co.uk (knew nothing about specialist vendors at the time). Then (or at the same time, can't remember, really) read a couple of reviews there and found out about Leisure guy. This lead me to his blog, to the Gentleman's Shop YouTube video (where I wondered what was that 'alum' block) and to the TGS website as well, to Mantic's videos, then to B&B, then here.

First items purchased were ToBS cremes with their corresponding after shaves and still sniffing them today strangely reminds me of my first steps in DE shaving at the end of 2009.

Nine months later, technique considerably improved, enjoying shaving as never before and the company here at TSR even more...

Started with Schick and some other disposables then used electric. Been using this one electric for 5 or so years till it started to die. So Googled "straight razor" and learned as much about them and haven't looked back since. Tomorrow marks 1st year anniversary.
Great thread my friend.

I was shaving on work days with an electric, and sometimes at weekends with a cartridge razor.

I reached a point where I was just looking on the net for 'a better way'. I found B&B, and read a bit, but then discovered shavemyface.com and actually signed up. This then led me to the Mantic videos etc.

Bought myself a Gillette Tech, a tube of Proraso and a Vulfix Boar brush. That was over a couple of years ago, and a nice shave can often be the highlight of my day (sad, I know).

Ingrown hairs , constantly were my bane . So I started searching the internet for info . Found Mantic , B&B eventually lead me to TSR.
I hated shaving , SWMBO hates stubble.

Im a member on TZ-UK watch forum and a member had some DE razors for sale in the sales corner, I didnt buy any but it got me interested!
As im a watch collector, I expect the same will happen here with buying different razors, creams, blades, brush etc, etc.
When I get into something I do it properly and will not rest until Ive found the best that works for me, so im already on the hunt for the best shaving cream that works for me and a pre/post shave cream!
Im enjoying the whole time to myself in the bathroom and finding out more and more to improve my technique, thank god for youtube! ;)
The missus prefers me to have a beard but for now I feel the need to have a nice clean shaven mug

Since I'm new here, I'll tell you my shaving history..

Started shaving quite late. (I don't have a lot of facial hair), at first I was quite barbaric, using disposable cartridge razors (anything that was on special offer, Gillette, WS etc..), and NO lather. (I said I was barbaric)

Blimey. I'm suprised you have got any neck left to shave. I couldn't stand the Gillette Gel, but it was a lot better than nothing at all. DE shaving will be an absolute joy to you.

Actually, I never saw the use of lather, but now I'm old and wise, and yes, DE shaving rocks, I have a much smoother skin as well. (less zits etc..), might be the fact I use aftershave and balm too.

Anyway, after just over a week of DE shaving, with only one or two nicks since the start, and VGS everytime, I doubt I'll ever go back to multiblades.
The only problem I have, is that DE shaving supplies here are crap/noexistent. Went to another "Hypermarket" in town. (different one to the one I use) to see if they had any different choices in blades soap...
They have 7.000 different gels/foams in cans and a choice of 2-5 blade razors, and 1 (no kidding) one shaving soap, which looks quite tatty, and is probably 1970's stock they have left. I have a choice of 2 kinds of blades (my normal shop only has one kind), Gillette Bleue and "Economie" (which are UK made WS blades) I bought a pack of the "economie" ones today.(just checked my ticket it shows up as "Wilkinson Blades") 10+2 free for 1,72 euro (1,41 GBP) that's 12p a blade.

So I envy you guys that can walk into boots and get all your gear there! :x So just to get even.. we've got better weather here! :p :p

As your in France you have to try Monsavon Bol à Raser, it should be available in any Hypermarket under €2, and its one of my favourite soaps, lathers great, moisturising and its cheap.

Regarding Boots, the nearest one to me only sells there own blades £2:50 and shave stick, no cream or soap bowl.

A few people have told me about the monsavon, although I haven't found it yet, I've been to Carrefour and Auchan, two of the biggest chains, I'll try Casino and Leclerc over the next few weeks.

Monoprix - if they still exist...

Yup! they do.

Was in Paris in May. Monsavon was selling everywhere, especially Monoprix at about $1.80 of your actual Euros.

It's good stuff, especially at that price.

Curiously enough, Gillette Bleue Extra blades (My daily, work shaver blades, 2nd faves) were dearer there!

Monsavon= Cheap
Everything else= Stand and deliver.

Bon nuit
