Has anyone ever used such a brush?

They are very floppy & odd, they do mix lather ok but I have yet to rid mine of it's awful horsey smell.

I got some but decided not to sell them, just not very good especially considering the good value of boar.

Nope, but I do know that Heavenhorse in China offer, next to their badger brushes and knots, horse hair knots as alternative to synthetic knots. Maybe you should regard them as such, alternatives to synthetic bristle brushes, not alternatives to boar or badger.

This company sells them:

I note that they offer some with a mixture of horse and bristle. Wonder what 'extra horse' is? Definitely going to have to give these a try.

Henk,

I've been looking into these as well. One of guys from SMF provided detailed account of these:

Then I came upon Vielong. You can't buy from them unless you're a vendor. I found one in the US bestgroomingtools. They have 2 of 6 I'm interested in namely:

Horse and bristle

12326

Paul,

Are these Vielong by any chance?

I typically rid of my boar funk with C.O. Bigelow ( Proraso ) or with other soaps in my arsenal. It's not that bad at all especially since it takes one use and it's been defunked. If you've problems in general try Borax, distilled vinegar and try going about it that way. I typically do latter when residue's built up on neck of bristle and and clean the bristle from there.

mantic59's videos are very informative, and witty to boot:

BTW, Paul any updates on your brush? How's it holding up? The performance improve at all? Thanks

Hi, I would like to help to clarify the question regarding what means “extra horse”. Manufacturer Vie-Long takes horsehair through a dedicate it process to provide smoothness to top of horse hair. Horsehair is a quite hard one, so depending on personal taste, “extra horse” provides a nicer feeling when contacting skin. Otherwise, horsehair quality is the same.

I bought the Extra Horsehair Barber's Brush from Spain using the interwebs for ten and a half Euros. It is excellent.
I saw horse described once as 85% badger and 85% boar, which is probably right.

My maths isn't as strong as it once was, but how does that work out? :?

I wasn't trying to be pedantic. Sorry if it came across that way. Didn't know if it was a typo, if you meant 85% badger 15% boar or vice versa.

Can you expand on what 85% qualities it has of each? I'm curious to know as I've never tried one. Is it as stiff as a boar? Do the tips split as it's used? Hold water like a badger?

Sounds to me like Jim is asking a reasonable question. Though his question in print could have been interpreted as being pedantic I reckon he is genuinely interested, and seeing as Bruce owns a horse hair brush himself it would make sense for him to elaborate. Isn't this forum all about sharing information on a shared interest?

Jim,

Good question! It's no problem at all my friend. I don't know about that brush but Vie-Long however goes through special treatment process. All of the brushes go through this except the 2 white boar/horse and 2 brown horse as well as J&M models. Hence my 12315 Boar wasn't prickly.

As far as horse/badger Vie-Long they use mane from horse so it's quite soft and we all know the characteristics of badger...

If I had to rate the 4:

Boar 12315 and Horse 13061 would be tied. Followed by Black Badger 16590 and then Horse/badger 14833.

I'm going to update the info when I get a chance on my reviews mate keep a look out.

You have asked me this question twice. Once by PM and now here on the face of the forum. Do you expect me to answer it twice?

I suggest that you buy one of these brushes, as they are very cheap, and give us all a full review.

I hit the wrong button and replied to your post by PM first, only realising once I'd sent the PM, so posted the same message as a thread reply (look at the time of the PM and my post, they're identical) as I thought other people might be interested in what qualities a horse hair brush has, just like I am.

I don't know why it's got your back up so much, I was just curious about what your post meant that's all. TBH, I wish I hadn't bothered if it was going to annoy you so much. I mean, it's not like this is a discussion forum or anything.
