Help with Gaggia evolution, no water

Hi,

I'd appreciate a bit of help with my Gaggia Evolution.

Water has stopped coming through the 'brew head'. I'm not sure that what it's called. Water does dip from the out side of the head. I've taken off the 'filter'(?) disk and cleaned it out, it's made no difference. Water comes out of the 'foam wand'.

Is there a way to descale it? What is the 'Outlet valve' and is that likely to be an issue? Where will I find it?

So many questions.

Cheers

David

You need to get yourself some descaling or citric (acid) powder and run it through the machine via the water tank, there is also supposed to be a spring and ball valve behind the shower screen, that might be scaled up.

I've had the shower screen off to look for the valve but can't tell where it is.

Where could I pick up some descaling or citric power, I've never come across it.

Cheers

You'll need some allen keys, no idea where the outlet valve is if that is bunged up. Guess you'll have to take the body off for that.

Failing that sign up to a coffee forum and ask, you'll find someone who'll know your machine better than I.

I have the same machine as you. As others have already said, a limescale blockage is most likely to be the source of your problems. If you have not already bought descaler then I would also recommend Puly Caff Descaler.

There are differing opinions regarding whether to use citric or tartaric acid based descalers for an aluminium boiler (as found in domestic Gaggia machines), however this is what I use and do so on the recommendation of others. (Whatever you use, I wouldn't leave the solution in the boiler for any more than 20 minutes or so). Although these instructions are for a Gaggia Classic, both machines are for these purposes the same:

I would also undo the two allen screws shown in your photo and try to remove the shower disc holding plate. If your machine is gunked up then it will be a real job to prise the plate away. It can take a bit of force but I carefully prise mine away with a spade screwdriver – after this clean everything you can see and then run the descaler though the machine with the plate still removed as otherwise large deposits of scale can break loose but are caught behind the plate.

The following gives you a step by step guide for removing the group plate:

Just miss out the part about changing the gasket unless you think you need to do this as well.

I've taken the group plate off and cleaned it and it's working much better already.

The descaler is on order, so I'll strip it and flush it when that arrives.
