Help needed: "Windows Restore" virus

OK, first off: Hi, I'm a born-again newbie here. My name's Ollie and I live in the Midlands :D

I know I said I'd be off here for Lent but I have a small emergency.

My daughter got a Windows laptop from my mum.

But . . . it seems to have picked up a virus or a trojan or something that claims to be "Windows Restore" and insists we buy some software necessary to defragment and generally fix the hard drive.

It's a scamming con but it's messed up her PC (not you, Adam)

Can anyone here help? Is there some disinfectant software I can run? Or does it need a clean install?

I'm a Mac users  so I haven't got a clue and my kid's quite keen to get her computer working. I guess all memory stick / flash drive pen things need wiping too?

Thanks!

Read this - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-r ... ws-restore - what you need to do with the memory sitcks, flash drives, MP3 players that look like mounted drives.... is to disinfect them with a known clean antivirus software install.
