Help a noob with blade selection?

Hi,

Have my starter kit set up, loving my Merkur Futur and Fatboy, tend to use the Futur at the mo.

Got some Derby blades, they seem to be 'ok' but reading on here how they're generally regarded as a bit c*ap, are they really that bad?

I ordered some Merkur blades from Irishbarber, but they never actually delivered and just refunded!

What should I try, Ideally I'd love a sampler pack like I got from Truefitt for Scent and balms, really helped me choose which ones I liked.

Does anyone do a 'sampler' of blades, or as a new shaver what should I try to get me away from the Derbys.

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome.

connaughtshaving.com do blade samplers and is my first stop shop for things shave related. Good customer service and quick delivery.

Very highly thought of on this forum and with good reason.

Edit: Meant to say that Feather blades work best in the Futur for me. But you will have fun finding out what suits you best.

+1 on what STG has stated,

Surprised that you never ordered the sampler pack from Paul to start with David, this is a given recommendation on every thread response such as this and all previously.

Derby's don't get any love from me, but one man's poison n' all that.

Get that sampler pack. :shave

+1 get the sampler pack, and if you're really a noob, I'd say try them in the FatBoy, I think it's a more "forgiving" razor than the Futur.
I've been told that the Derbys ar quite mild, so probably better suited to the Futur than the FB.

Blades are a very personal choice, I get along with Merkur blades, they get no love on the forums though..
I've got some derbys, but haven't tried them.

If you send me you postal adress, I can PIF a packet of Gillette Bleue in the post for you.

Cheers!

FB.

As already stated, best advice is to buy a starter pack of blades from Paul at Connaught.

Derby blades seem to polarise opinion on shaving forums like no other single item. They work fine for me, so don't dismiss them until you've given them a fair trial.

But step away from the Feathers. At least until you've developed your technique on something less lethal. They're very sharp, and not for the inexperienced.

Regards

Feathers in a Futur set on 6 should take quite a bit of skin off.. if that's what you want ;) (not saying you shouldn't, but not as a newbie)

FB.

Don't fear the Feather, they are very sharp but short lived, I'm going to be giving my new to wet shaving cousin some Feathers and a mild razor like a Tech.

Connaught is the only UK supplier of a blade sample pack but there are also various ebay retailers specialising in certain blades.

Come now, Blyth Spirit loves them, and my mind is reminding that at least one other doesn't rate them below "vaguely blade shaped piece of tinplate chewed out of rusty bean can using ones own teeth"

Connaught, sampler pack. It's a great start. It's where I started about 2.5 years ago and I've since been through a lorra-lorra different blades, always seeking "the one for me". Not because the sampler pack is full of rubbish, more that I'm the guy that's convinced that the blade could be just around the corner, so if I see one I've not tried, I'll get some and try them.

Could I get by on one or more brands Paul sells in his samplers, sure I could... but the key thing at this point is to get your technique sorted so you can use any blade to your advantage (except maybe the 39p Lasers sold in Wilko, they're made of plywood & hardboard I think)

Too right I do, they are absolutely first class. I have a fair few in the stash also.

I often wonder how many of the Merkur blade detractors have given them a decent trial run? Why would a company with the global reputation, sector prominence and product history of Merkur actively market a product (and at a premium price) which so many potential users claim is barely fit for purpose...

Well said, !!!!!!
What you said is perfectly logical and rational.
I guess the other question is, why would anyone make nuclear weapons when we know just how horrendous they are ?
