Hi Kev, welcome to the forum. Lots to cover here, but fortunately the others have gone through all the important stuff. If you post your razor, preferably with a pic, you'll get a very frank assessment, then that's out of the way!
As for a "forgiving first timers straight razor", well I don't know if one exists, but you essentially have two routes available, either an entry level new model from a respected name such as Dovo, Thiers Issard or Revisor, or a restored vintage razor. The latter is potentially the better choice - depends what you get. Neil Miller is the man to contact about that, and he is a very helpful chap indeed. My recommended specification would be carbon steel, 5/8, full hollow, round point.
