I understand the idea you have, I thought the same hoping for a one in all solution and like you I did not balk at the thought of shelling out a few quid for something decent. As a set the EJ one is beautiful and indeed it will hold the brush and stand, however I think you would fond that the bowl is form over function and there are far better lathering bowls much cheaper. I have the EJ one with the handle and it is a fine blol, the ridges on the bottom really help to build lather.
It wouldn't stop me buying the set if I really liked it, I bought a stand but it is a razor an brush one, the lathering bowls, of which I have a couple now, are kept in the cupboard and used as needed.
As for which creams, all the ones mentioned are a good choice, I really think you should go to closeshave as suggested by Hando and get a few to try.
