Hi Guys,

I'm new on the forum, since I'm retired now (since 2 weeks, been in the Military for 36 years) I have lots more time to do things that I like. I shave with DE razor. I don't own a lot of shaving stuff, just a Edwin Jagger DE89L and a Silvertip Badger EJ46 and some soaps and creams. I tried to shave with a straight razor some 30+ years ago but it didn't work out (didn't know about the fact that a SR wasn't shave ready out of the factory back then). I'm going to straight razor shave, but this time I'm better prepared ;-)

I found some very good tutorials and movies on the forum and I probably need to read up for a few weeks. Would like to thank all those here that provide so much useful information! Greetings from Belgium, Ron

Hi Ron, I worked with the Belgian military in Kabul a few years back, great guys.

Nice razor, I like the Ed Jagger stuff. Good luck with your straight razor quest, plenty of knowledgeable guys here to help.

Welcome! :)

Hey Ron!

Welcome to the Room! Best advice I can give you, send a PM to Neil and check his website in the bargain basement.
Should be able to sort you a entry level strop and shave ready straight for around 50 quid. That should get you started!

You won't be disappointed!

Your Neighbour,

Max

Welcome to the forum Ron. Learning to shave with a straight razor sounds like an excellent project for a newly retired gentleman to me. Max mentioned Neil (Miller), in case you haven't found the link here it is:

Highly recommended.

@ all who wished me welcome, a big thanks! This forum seems one of the more friendly and relaxed I have encountered so far.

@ baz chaz: Yes the retirement is really wonderful, lots of time to do stuff you like, and I have the luck to be only 52 years of age ;-)

@ moodymick: It's amazing how much people come to visit the Menin Gate and the Battlefield tour. We can only try to imagine what a horrible time that has been, the names of the 54.896 soldiers that died here are etched in the walls, lets hope we never have to endure such a time again and never forget those who have given there lives so we can live free!

@Jeltz : The coticule razor hones are definitely something I will look into, I used to hone my own knifes in the past, not with a coticule but with a edge pro http://www.edgeproinc.com/ wonderful system but you can't hone SR on it.

@ CanucksTraveller: I have colleagues that are in Kabul right now. Things have changed a lot the last year over there.

@ FrenchBlade: I found Neil's site a few days ago and I have found some stuff that I like, send him a email and he answered with lots of information that was very useful. Since I send some more emails but didn't get a answer, he probalbly is away for a few days, looking forward to his answer and the SR and strop I'll order. But thanks for the tip anyway.

I'll keep you all up to date on how my shaves go in the near future! Greetings Ron

@ Arrowhead: I'm glad I found Neils site, prices seem very reasonable and closer to home for me than some sites in the US.
