Getting a copy of Goins to the UK

I would like to get a copy of Goins' Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings. I can't find anywhere in the UK that has it. The only company in the US that responded to my enquiries was <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.knifeworld.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">www.knifeworld.com</a><!-- w -->. They want $27.95 for the book, but $35.40 for Global Priority Mail. :-O

Does anybody know of a source in the UK or a cheaper way of getting it here?

Whenever I’ve wanted a book that’s hard to find, I found that, if you go to your local book store, and explain what it is you want, they can get it for you, and you may find it cheaper.

They may want the “ISBN” number, but that should easily be gotten from the website selling it.
If it’s for razor manufacturers you want it for, try this site.

Hope this helps.

It is for razors. It seems to be the "definitive" text. Sadly, it is out of print, so I doubt the usual suspects (LBS, amazon etc.) will be able to help.

It also sounds like the within-US shipping is heavy, so getting someone to forward it may not work out much cheaper either.

So I think it's either find an existing copy in the UK, or a friend who is travelling from the US and doesn't mind lugging a weighty tome back with them :)

I've seen (the contents of) that link before. The original is here:

Before you do splash out on a copy, be aware that it is not all its cracked up to be. A lot of the entries are basically what you could read right off the tang of the razor - no history just half a dozen words - and quite a lot of it is just - how can I put this delicately? I can't - a lot of it is just plain wrong. My own copy is full of crossings-out and I have added numerous notes to the margins and corrected a lot of mistakes.

Having said that, in fairness quite a lot of it is extra-ordinarily interesting, particularly the american entries, with a lot of pics and line drawings. You do get the feeling that it is mostly compiled from a knife enthusiasts point of view, though. Someone should do a razor-only one, with photos of actual tang markings and makers histories like Tweedale did. Without the three-figure price tag of Tweedales venerable tomes, though!

Neil

Thanks yet again Neil for helping to guide me along the path. It looks like there isn't an economical way of getting it so I think it's probably not worth it
