Flat screen advice.

Finally, I'm in the market for a HD flat screen after buying a HD satellite receiver and previously palming the family off with an old CRT because I wasn't quite ready to make the leap. Now I'm just fed up with all the remote controls and extra boxes that nobody else can work out how to use.

Problem is I can't realistically go any higher than 40" due to size of TV room and positioning (don't ask)but I'd prefer a plasma because of apparently larger viewing angles and less motion blur and judder from what I have seen. I don't really want to spend much more than £500, £600 absolute tops and do I really need full HD? I think our HD diet will be mainly from broadcast media rather than other HD sources like blue ray and the like.

Haven't looked into them recently but I would always go for Panasonic based on previous purchases.

Panasonic, Samsung and LG are your friends (Sony are lovely tech but just too expensive!), you can pick up absolute bargains now the recession is still on.

The best prices are in your local Richer sounds, they are fantastic places

A few points Tony, most newer (i.e.not old models) Plasma TV's start at 42". LCD/LED Tv's have changed dramatically over that last couple of years and give much better viewing angles than before, also the frame rate has increased so you don't get the judder that was associated with the old ones. Make sure you get a 5 year guarantee on it as if they go wrong it is more often than not a write off. Don't forget to factor in the cost of a stand (if you don't have one, nothing looks worse than a new TV on a crappy old stand). John Lewis are doing a good deal on a Panasonic LCD at the moment and comes with a free 5 year G'tee or go to Richer sounds and have a look as they offer a 5 year G'tee for 10% of the purchase price.

I suspect you are not too fussy to want full HD otherwise you would have had it by now. I still haven't bothered to upgrade to Sky HD - I have two boxes and they would want another £20 a month on top of my £52 package which gives me sport but not films. I get great quality from my two main TVs without HD. Just how much does a 42 inch bother you? I have a 40 inch Sony in my lounge. But in my study which I also use for home cinema (11x9) I have a 42 inch. It seemed too much at first, now I'm delighted with it. The old rules about the relationship between room size and TV screen are long gone.

Enjoy the search.

I'll get a freeview HD set up when this area can get reception, until then, I'm staying with what I've got.

Good advice here, Tony! LG, Panasonic, Sony and Samsung are good brands. I would not go for a LCD (in short: very good for gamers but not as good for reg TV). You´re right re full HD, even though transmitting in full HD (or HD) dosn´t meen it has been recorded in full HD (very few programs and film has). Plasma is excellent for reg broadcasting TV, but LED is way cooler and the future (+ costs you less in electricity), I would buy LED, very nice tech, but it´ll most likely cost you a pretty penny more than a plasma. We´ve had our plasma for 4-5 years (42 inch) and it gives a very nice picture still (we also have a projector, that we only use for film).

GL!

Thanks for all the contributions fella's.

I've decided....plasma but between 37" and 40" (42" won't fit in my TV cabinet ;) )and as suggested really not too fused about full HD capability.

You physically can't get full HD on sub 42" plasma anyway and Panasonic are the only only brand that make them so inadvertently I've dramatically reduced my search and they seem to be within budget.

@ Mikael. Stop it, it's bad enough I look at your damn brushes.

I just love buying audio/visual gear. I must start thinking about my viewing arrangements for the olympics and I start piffing some surplus gear that's around the house.

Just a thought Peter, as the Olympic host broadcaster is the BBC, they'll be going bonkers with all the HD and red button options.

You don't need to increase your sky subs for the olympics in HD. Freesat also offer HD (albeit not quite Sky quality) from the same satellite so all you need to do is buy an ordinary HD receiver (non SKY) and you should be able to link the boxes via the loop through connection at the rear of the box.
