How many makes/types of DE blades are currently available?...does anyone know?

I'm just curious..as when I first started DE shaving in the 60's..(That was the first time round)....all that seemed to be available in the local area were..Gillette.....Wilkinson sword....or Jewel....there obviously were others...but the world was a smaller place in those days.....

Then along comes the internet and there are literally dozens of different blades available..

Makes me wonder how I managed for so long without Feathers and Gillette yellows.

I love it when you have to scroll through a thread.

I wonder what would happen to our hobby if a shaving craze were to take off in India and China? I'm sure that someone is thinking right now how to get it started!

But are they all different blades at all? Just like recordable optical media there are loads of different brands but only a handfull of manufacturers. Are we comparing rebranded but in actual fact identical blades with each other? Do we really have a such a wide choice? Who has the inside knowlegde?

I rate most Gillettes, Lords, Feather and Rapira. Don't know how many are truly different; how many different manufacturing plants are there in India, Russia, Egypt, China...

Thats quite a selection NTS...looks as though I have quite a few to go yet then...Some of those I've never even heard of.....

Strikes me as strange, that Gillette for all their multi bade Razor marketing..still make some of the best/most popular blades..IMO............... after my favourite Feather of course...

Could we do with a list of blades on here with user grading and star ratings??....What do you think?....not sure how it would work ........but is it possible.....Or is there one already that I haven't found yet?

Impossible. One man's Derby is another man's Feather.

Oh yes, I'm sure Gi/////ette is working hard at getting those booming economies convinced of the "benefits" of the next generation of multiple blade cartridges. :icon_rolleyes:

I put together a spreadsheet with my findings (it's where I got the above list) but there was a lack of interest because,as Treb said, different people like different ones. I mainly use it to remind myself which of the more obscure ones were good! If you are interested, though, it's here but I haven't kept it up to date: http://www.theshavingroom.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?tid=3950

It's also important to note that different blades work better in some razors than in others - something which would take me too long to document for myself, although I put the best and worst combos in another document I keep.
I am so anal.

Edit: You could always use the spreadhseet as a template for your own findings.

Thanks for that NTS...i've finally managed to get a look at your document....I'm not the most computer literate person you'll ever meet so it took me a while, but I got there in the end......

I will have a look at it in depth later....It looks to be very thorough and very useful,I'll see if I can add my own humble findings from my old fashioned "notebook"........................... fascinating stuff this shaving.

You're right of course...blades do behave differently in different razors ...add to that the possible soap combinations...and the possibilities are infinite..........

Thanks again.

No problem. Glad it may be of use to you!
I'm keen on computers but I can't keep up with the pace of technology so I wouldn't feel behind if I were you - giving it a try is the most important.
Looking back on it now it could seem a bit involved. The scores in each category you key in yourself then the total score for the blade is calculated.
