Custom Razors

Having dropped my DE86 razor in the bathroom yesterday, it now has a 'little dint' on the head. Although it wont affect the shave, its staring at me every time I pick up the razor, and annoying the crap out of me.

I was thinking I might buy myself a new EJ head, but this time get a custom handle to go with it. I like the Bull mastiff handles from bobsrazorwork in the US ( $40), but was wondering if there is anybody closer to home who makes custom handles.

If you were to get a custom handle.. what would be your preference?

Any info would be welcome.
cheers
Jase.

I'm pretty sure Neo got some custom handle fittings a while back with a view to making some wooden ones - whether he did make any and for what razor(s) I'm afraid I don't know, but it's worth a PM. Hawkeye has a Knack or Twist with a heavy duty knurled metal handle from some dude with a downhome type name (it's not Possumskin Jed, but that's the sort of thing).

Otherwise, you'll probably have a model engineers' society somewhere near you: in my experience people like that are quite approachable if you show an interest. You might well find someone who'll turn out a handle for you in exchange for a couple of pints.

Cooncat bob - thats the website I was referring to.. I havent emailed him yet.. wanted to see if anything can be done closer to home.. Cheers for info.

emailed Bob and the handles he makes do fit the EJ heads... they are metric threads apparently. Dont know about the gillette threads neo.

So, I have placed an order for a bull mastiff handle for the EJ head with Bob. $40 + $6 shipping, seems reasonable.
The one I have in mind is this one ( the handle only ofc):

Nice handle, like a HD in style but it looks bigger proportionally to the head, any idea what sort of weight is in a handle like that?

I dont Audio. When I get some more info, I will post further details.

from Bob:
It is the standard bull mastiff handle:

3 1/8th inches long. barrel .485, knob .585 by 5/8th long, weight apx 78 grams.

Hi Jase!

If you have already ordered, I would be interested to know if your handle gets delayed by HM Customs & Excise on it's way through, and an additional charge levied. I got really badly "burnt" recently after buying a Straight razor on Ebay from a Vendor in the States. I had to pay an additional amount at the P.Office before I was allowed to take delivery!

All the best, spandex..

Strange. I received three straights from the US recently, labelled as such, with no problems. Mind you, the package was also labelled as a gift - perhaps that's the trick. Hunny will know I expect.

I was recently nailed by Customs even though the parcel from the U.S was labelled a gift, seems they took more notice of the declared value which the seller exaggerated by 30% Guess how much I had to pay? Doh!

Biggest "trick" is to have a postie with Alzheimer's... I've had packages delivered to me where you could barely find the address for all the "FEE TO PAY" stickers on it. Postie said "it's not on my list, so I'll not collect it" :D

It's a lot hit & miss - but I think that with both Royal MAil & HM Gubmint being in shit street financially they're stiffing as many people as they possibly can... RM £8 a go, HM Gubmint for all the VAT they can get. Also unhelpful when a-hole senders inflate the value - especially for personal shipments because not only will they include the declared value, but also the value of the postage as per the EU regulation governing imports by post.
