Case cleaning & restoring

After the recent thread about cleaning plastic cases using Brasso (superb tip by the way), I'm intrigued to know what everyone does/use's to clean old faux leather/vinyl cases.

I've got an Aristocrat Junior case inbound from the USA, but the inside looks a bit grubby & the inside top lining looks crinkled, I assume it's dried out.
This is the only photo I've got so far.

Has anyone got any recomendations for "rehydrating" (for want of a better word) this and any top tips for these type's of case.

Dubbin or leather food to treat dried-out leather.

On hard plastic/bakelite and similar cases and razors, I use automotive scratch remover and polish- it works extremely well.

On vinyl, faux leather and so forth, the 303 aerospace cleanser/protectant is great, and seems less "greasy" than Armor-All.
303 Products

I'm not sure what you have available, but the Continental equivalents are fine, I'm sure.:icon_razz:

A light mix of the scratch remover/polish, and Flitz or Maas metal polish does wonders for razors in general.

I use a specialist plastic polish and cleaner for cleaning plastic and faux leather cases. But I think you will find that with the case on its way to you that the metal under that lining on the inside of the lid had corroded and this has caused it to come away. You will need to sort that out 1st, then you may find that using contact adhesive (after getting rid of the rust) you can re-position it back into place before you try to clean it. It should clean up with washing up liquid and a tooth brush, but be careful as you can take off the Gillette markings very easily. Finally buff with a microfiber cloth.

Plastic cases are much easier to clean and restore, this type and others i have had mixed results, i now try and wait to find a mint / minty one in the first place, but obviously this is getting harder as there are less cases and more collectors (like me :angel:) around.

if the outside of the case cleans up ok and you just want to hide the inside of the lid, i can send you an insert....

best

You already did mate:icon_wink: and fantastic it is:icon_razz:

It's funny looking back at my original post from last July, as to how my cleaning and restoration process has evolved, I can pretty much tidy up any case now with the tips and products that I've picked up here.

I've used Brasso on the plastic covers on my cars headlights. Saw it on a web site. It cleaned but I don't think it restored. Didn't do more harm but not sure it'd try it on a Gillette case?
(Did bring back memories of 'belt buckles' :)-( )
