Caring for Carbon Steel Razor

I've had my carbon steel Dovo for a month now and have already noticed a couple of little dark grey spots and some discolouration. I am pretty certain that I'm not looking after it well enough. I take it that I should be more careful drying it before putting it away, but is there anything I can do to get it back to mint again?

What kind of oil? Sorry I'm totally useless at this sort of stuff. I have WD40 at one end of the spectrum, and some shaving oil at the other. I think I've got some of that oil you mix with petrol for a strimmer in the shed. Oh, and baby oil of course! ;) Actually I'm on a roll here...three or four varieties of olive oil, groundnut (peanut!), vegetable, sunflower but no castor. I even know some oil-based gags:

Q. What squirts out of the ocean floor shouting "knickers, knickers, knickers!"?
A. Crude oil

Q. What squirts out of the ocean floor shouting "underwear, underwear, underwear!"?
A. Refined oil

Anyway, are any of the above oils any good or do I need to buy something different?

Few oils can be used, I personally us refined petroleum oil, basically the oil used in sowing machines.
Avoid cooking/vegetable oils, I heard they contains acids that might foul the blade (but I could be wrong!)

You can also use Camellia oil

OK thanks Max! I think I'll get some sewing machine oil to start with. I presume once I've cleaned the blade I can start oiling it. A couple of drops wiped over with a cloth before I put it away? If I do this do I need to clean the oil off before stropping?

I dry the razor on the radiator (central heating, doesn't go above 40c) for an hour or so then put a few drops of oil on it, spread it around, then wipe excess off with a piece of TP. (superficial wipe)
I wipe it again before stropping, (with a bit more pressure)

That's great, thanks again! :D

Do you leave it out in the open to dry before puting it away? It´s a good thing to do. I leave mine out for approx 24 hrs, before tucking them in :D

No, I think that's part of the problem. The bathroom is usually quite humid anyway and I put it back in its box only to shave again with it the next day. I will have to leave it out I think, until I get some more razors anyway!!

I rinse mine with hot water to get the soap and gunk off, then then dry/polish it with toilet paper. I also run the toilet paper between the scales to pick up any water in there.

The razor then gets shut away in out box room to air.

Can't you find a child proof place for it outside the bathroom? Practically anywhere indoors would be better.

Yes, you're absolutely right, I'm sure I can keep it in one of the high up kitchen cupboards. Perhaps not the one above the steamer though. :)

If you want to be safe: one cash box like this: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=petty+cash+box" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=petty+cash+box</a><!-- m -->
Add some Silica gel to go in it: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=silica+gel" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=silica+gel</a><!-- m -->

And for a tenner you're all set, cash boxes exist with combination lock, which might be easier.
