Borax for cleaning brushes.

My new Edwin Jagger 'Best Badger' brush came with a limited set of care instructions among which was mentioned occasional cleaning in borax solution :? .This would be for the removal of mildew which I have never noticed in my shaving brushes.
Any comments from the more experienced would be appreciated.

It's not (just) mildew - it's to remove soap residues too... oh and banned from general sale by the almighty EU despite being used for centuries...
Oh so that's why the local ironmonger sells Borax "substitute"! Anyone use that?

Unbelievably, you're correct!
Technical grade borax is available on E-Bay (as decahydrate). Will that do?
How about borax substitute available in 'green' shops?
Will ordinary shampoo suffice, as suggested elsewhere?
So many questions!
