Beagles!

Noticing IDS's footnote link: http://www.rainviewbeagles.co.uk, I couldn't help thinking about a display by The Cleveland Hunt, at the Stokesley Agricultural Show, NE England, earlier this year.

As you might imagine, the show included much horn blowing and lots of men and women in scarlet jackets - all blooming impressive in itself. But, most fascinating to me was the pack of beagles running with the hunt. I don't think I've seen so many dogs of any breed running together in one place! Beautiful animals! Perhaps the most telling part of the show was when all the children in the crowd were invited to climb into the arena and play with the dogs. And they were as friendly as can be! The kids were patting and stroking them, and the dogs were clearly enjoying themselves as well. Not a single trace of aggression, no biting or anything, even though there was a hell of a lot of noise and excitement!

Marvelous! I'm sorry to say that my present living circumstances prevent me from keeping a dog but, I have to say, should the opportunity ever arise, a beagle is certainly a breed I'd consider.

Good PR FM, good PR. Beagling is mostly for hunting hare on foot and they'd take those to the show instead of the fox hounds that have been kept at home, if the kids got a nose bleed with those around they'd tear their skin off.

Nice picture though, with all those horses they are chasing Freddy Fox definitely.

Yep beautiful dogs! And even the hunting ones are soft as muck and they really do have a love for children, but they can also be very stubborn.

Antdad was right beagling is done on foot and traditionally for Hares, now that's illegal they tend to follow a scent trail and amazingly can cover upto 30 miles in an afternoon. Letting the kids into the arena is quite common practice.

If there's a horse and dogs then it tends to be foxhounds but a few packs follow beagles on horse as well, the other giveaway is the scarlet jackets, beagle packs have green jackets.

FM if you ever decide to buy one don't get from hunting stock, they don't tend to settle to well in homes, a show type beagle is much more domestic and bred for looks and health rather than scent and endurance.

If pedigree papers arnt important then I can certainly recommend Besgle Welfare for a rescue beagle.

+ the thought of a rescue or rehomed dog. We're now on our 2nd rehomed English bull terrier & many of these dogs have been brought up as loving family pets, are well socialised with a known history and really want to be part of a settled homelife once more. It is just tragic that so many beautiful animals are having to be resettled due to domestic break ups & economic problems.
