It will work...just maybe not be suited to the individual but I take your point on board, it is expensive. Use it enough and more importantly, enjoy ot enough and it'll be worth it.
across the grain question . all the videos I watch the shaver takes the razor from ear towards the chin in direction , but I find I get a much closer shave going in the opposite direction from chin to ear especially below my jaw line
I'm not bothered about it maybe not being the correct / proper technique as it's working for me , but is there any reason I shouldn't be shaving this way i.e it will encourage ingrown hairs etc ?

Would depend on the direction of your own growth I would think. Sometimes I do both. From the ear towards the chin then the next pass go the opposite way to get abit closer. Dont think there is any right and wrong way of doing it.
