Useful, thanks - just perusing really (aside - honest just looking pet!)1950 is "V". 1 - 4 is quarter, 1 = Jan-Mar etc.
This only holds for US manufacture, I think the English ones had no date code.
Between 1930 and 1949 they didn't put date codes on the US ones either, so it's a bit vague, all you can do is try to go by model and other features, but you need geek factor to figure it out. Occasionally if you get one that comes still with a box and the original blades, the blades might have a code that will narrow it down a bit. But the blades may be from before or after the razor potentially.
Good luck!
Hi, I'm new!
Intrigued by the birth year razor idea. I would be looking for a 1949 Rocket or Superspeed (if I was looking!) How did the dating work prior to 1950 and how did it work in UK?
Cheers
That is so kind, thank you so much. At the moment however I am really just surveying the various options I may (or may not) have open to me in the new year.Hi there,
I'm a 1949 baby myself and may have an option for you. Unfortunately, the only US Gillette razor sure to be from that year was the Executive, which is about THE most expensive razor they made. Very beautiful but crazy prices.
However, I have a cased US superspeed in great shape that's looks barely used that's not dated but has what I believe to be the original blades included. Yeah, US Gillette dated all their blades and this razor has one blade in it dated U2 (1949) and guessing that's the year the razor was made. Comes with the pack of remaining Blue Blades.
No idea where it is but I can look if you like. Just to warn you that shipping from the USA will run $30, although the razor set itself won't be pricey.
Hope that helps a bit,
Martin
