I'm also an avid home brewer! My wife bought me the basic startup kit a few Christmases ago and I started out brewing the 2 can kits and I found that the Festival kits gave the best results.
I then moved swiftly on to building my own mash tun and brew pot etc and started playing about with recipes. (I've also dabbled with BIAB 'brew in a bag' which is something I'd like to get more into.) The trouble is, brewing from grain takes much more time. But the end result is much nicer than any kit.
I've also brewed 'turbo cider' and wine from kits, which my wife loves!
The best advice I could give is... find your local home brew shop and talk to the owner. The advice they can give you will be priceless. Advice you'll never get from Tesco or Wilkinsons or any online retailer.
