To answer the question though, the longest lasting wood finish I've used has been a cocobolo handle finished with oil. I assume tung oil. That said, cocobolo is pretty dense from what I've read and has natural water repellent characteristics.
Stabilization does make a lot of sense. Do wonder why it's not used more often....
