Why can't I get as close a shave with DE as cartridge?

Reading this made me wonder if you have the base plate on the right way up? If it's upside down it'd stop the razor working. Not trying to teach granny to suck eggs but, surprisingly, according to some of the posts I've seen on forums, the occasional bloke makes that mistake when starting out. You really shouldn't have to apply "quite a bit of pressure" to get the razor to work properly, even if you've got a beard like Desperate Dan. Thought I'd mention it just in case.
