Whiting-Adams Vulcan 167

Hello friends. On this restoration I am going to post pictures along the months the restoration process lasts. Step by step.
This brush is a large brush. Handle height is 90 mm, and I can put a 30 mm knot on it. The handle has the 167 number engraved. I think it probably is the total height of the original brush (90 mm handle + 77 mm bristles)

Here the pics before cleaning, when I received it.

Well, here we go. Starting the work. Ferrule was not glued. It had a cork gasket at top of the handle. And the inner ring of the ferrule was oxidized.

After cleaning the inner ring, finally I decided to extract it. With caution.

There he goes again. The good Doctor, almost single-handedly preserving America's shaving brush heritage. I'm really looking forward to seeing this unfold into yet another restoration masterpiece.

The inner ring of the ferrule has a protective function to the ferrule. It is to prevent the ferrule cracking by knot expansion when wet, specially the boar ones. It resists the pressure. It will therefore be necessary to make another, at appropriate diameter! And moisture resistant! This brush needs to last another century more, at least!
 
Good Doctor, What do you have in store for that Rubberset? Great to see these restorations my friend.

I have a Rubberset 400 at a specialist engravers at the moment - just going through some deigns to see if inlaying with enamel paint is possible.

Handle is drying.
First 30 min immersion Pure Tung Oil + Whitespirit 40%. Several days drying hanging at my balcony. Steel wool polish spinning 1200-1500 rpm, then a cloth also.
Second 1 hour immersion Pure Tung Oil + oil of sweet orange 3%. Several days drying. Same operation to polish with steel wool + cloth
Third coat with a lining Pure Tung Oil + oil of sweet orange 3%. One hour after, dry with a cloth, now hanging at the balcony.

Ferrule pending installing new inner ring. The inner ring is from a pipe of chromed brass, from a sink. I think it will be corrosion resistant.
 
Hi friends. Inner ring is finished. Made with two thin chromed brass rings. The inner, is cut to exact lenght, and epoxied. Then I smoothed the edges with the dremel, to prevent the ring cuts the badger hair. Just lacks to glue it to the ferrule in his placement. Next restoration session.

I'm crying of joy with the Whiting Adams VULCAN 167 restored brush in my hands. You will cry too, friends. I'm sure.

I'm thinking if it would be convenient to cover it with a coat of Liberon Black Bison Wax. It is a final finish, and not any other finish can be applied over that. I will think. Probably the finish will be glossy, nice, but wax and water and alcaline shaving soap are not good friends, I think. Without wax, it has no gloss, just satin, but nice. And it can be oiled again if it is needed after some months of use.

It has been resting for several days, and several times, in a bath of a secret blend of Pure Tung Oil, Sweet Orange Oil, and others secret ingredients, in secret proportions, at controlled, but secret, temperature. The Dr Dulcamara's Tung Oil's secret blend recipe, ha ha. After each bath, several weeks hanging from a paracord, outdoors. Two or three months in total, I think. Finally, several minutes polishing with 0000 grit steeel wool, and a cloth, spinning at 1200-1500 rpm, in a mandrel at the drill. Now it is satin finished.
