Which Digital Camera?

Brethren,

I am looking to acquire a digital camera. The prime purpose of which will be to take photographs to put on Ebay, this Forum and others and family snaps. It will not be grand studies of panoramic vistas et cetera.

What do I need?

Being a technophobe / Luddite I am not particularly up on the jargon. The initial search is a lesson in marketing waffle?

Battery type?
Magnification?
Size?
Makes?
Price expectation?
Sources?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

To put photos onto the web or this site you don't need much in the way of megapixels. 1 is probably sufficient.
I would recommend for family snaps that 8 to 10 megapixels is plenty. Most cameras for sale today are around that mark.
You probably don't need much of a zoom range either. In 35mm terms 35mm - 100mm would do.
I would avoid AA batteries, go for a camera with a lithium Ion battery or similar. They last longer.
A compact camera is fine.
Makes, I would buy one of the more well known makes. Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Pentax, Olympus. I would even include Panasonic now in this list.
Price, depends how much you want to spend.
£240 or so would buy you a Panasonic Lumix TZ7. Its small, good quality lens, massive zoom range 25mm - 300mm. Fairly easy to use, 10mp. My second choice would be perhaps a Canon Ixus (loads of models to choose from).

Wow!

£240 will buy you one hell of a digital camera.

I have used Panasonic, Nikon. Ricoh and Casio.

This would do all you want and more. But spend as much as you wish!

Anyone have experience with the small digital Leica's? Just saw one in a store which did not look very fancy compared to others, but cost a staggering 459 Euro

Don't forget that panasonic and leica compacts are the same except for the badge. The lens on the panasonic has the word leica on it. The panasonic is cheaper but thats purely marketing.

Thanks for this Fido...in fact thanks to all...looks more like my price range! Good looking kit actually! Could be a runner.

Have a look at that group test, the conclusion is on page 15 I think.

I had the same problem with my older sister a few months a go. So I asked her what she would use it for and the answers were the same as you (with the exception of Ebay pics)

So she ended up with a Pentax I10, 12mp, face recognition, anti-shake, Li-ion battery all the works........even take HD movies !!..........£50.00 from ASDA, she loves it as it shoots in automatic, simple to use and does exactly what she wants.
I have the same camera for work and it does the job..........you can go for a high end camera and not use 1/2 the things on it. The only thing to factor in is an SD card and they are cheap enough and ASDA will often do a deal if you buy it with the camera.
If you want to take semi-pro pic then spend the £250 and you will get a Panasonic Lumix TZ20 top of the range and not use many of the features you have paid for.......do you need geotagging?
Your money though...........have a look at your local supermarket and see if they have what you want............
