What are we looking at in top down brush pictures?

Color of the tips and maybe how broken in it is (if used)... and of course it's also SHAVING PORN :D

But probably more the latter Mikael as those shots usually do look pretty cool.
It does as Peter points out also show relative bloom when comparing two brushes and it could show up any major faults in the knot but I think its more a case of just looking big and sexy.
It might be worth mentioning however that a big sexy bloom doesn't guarantee a knot that's big in quality.

If two brushes are alongside each other - the relative bloom - the larger one is likely to be more floppy than the other which will have a firmer backbone.

For starters!

Right, that makes sense, but wouldn't a horizontal shot be more explanatory? The horizontal shot shows how the brush fans out more.

Also, could it also not indicate that the more spread out knot is more dense? I'm only throwing some ideas out there so I can learn.

As for the shaving porn, that goes without saying! :)

That has piqued my interest. What major faults would we be looking for?

Shedding.
I once replaced a knot that was shedding badly and the hair had come out in small clumps in a couple of places. When damp and viewd from above, gaps were visible in the blooom.
