As far as the shave quality, we really haven't advanced at all since the lather catchers, blades maybe, but not the razors.

Absolutely, in some ways there was a drop at times where they got less in terms of quality of shave in my experience. Not saying there haven't been good things that followed too. Just not all improvements over the years were improvements.
