Resignation

Erm yea so I resigned from my work today............

Don't have anything to move on to yet but I was faced with decision to make, the smart choice or the right choice.

The smart choice wasn't right and the right choice wasn't smart.

It all went well though. My Manager was surprised and my Regional Manager was most understanding both saying they respected the way I conducted the situation and the regional manager saying he respected the reasons for why I was leaving. Work has been having a massive detrimental effect on my life and health.

I was told by the RM that the company wouldn't be the same without me and he really valued me as a member of staff, shame it takes handing in notice of resignation for this to be mentioned. He was very gracious towards me and said that the door would always be open for me in the future. To me, that speaks volumes about myself and my character.

SWMBO asked me if I'd be reporting certain issues that I had previously but the graciousness shown to me has made me deicde that for the next 4/5 weeks I shall be working to the same level I have always had so that come my last day I can walk out of there with my head held high, knowing I have done the right thing and with my dignity firmly intact.

Not really expecting many replies to this, just wanted to share.

You spend so much of your life in work that, if it's not going well, it can spill into your personal life and affect your relationships and health.

Personally, I think it's always a good idea not to burn your bridges as you never know what the future holds. From what you have said I think the right thing to do is to continue to behave with the same level of integrity that you have up until now.

Yea Rik, that was never going to be an issue. As hando said I guess I am a man of principle.

Fido I hope all does go well and Im sure I can find something else soon enough.

Just don't know how many jobs require a decent man of principles anymore. Seems like all places want is drive and greed and the willingness to f**k others over to get to the top. lol

Good Man Andy ........... in fact even more important ; Your Own Good Man ! It's so often just a sad fact of life that the honest hard worker who's not always drawing attention isn't valued until he / she isn't there anymore. Very best of luck my friend.

Johnny.

I admire the way you have conducted yourself, because I would have done it differently, and certainly with less grace. I would have quietly found something else, and then told them to shove it.

Your method is probably best. You can put your cards on the table, and perhaps they could have come up with some options for you to change your role, or hours etc. It's always interesting what employers can conjure up and offer you when you tender your resignation. When I left my last employer, all of a sudden they offered to change this, change that, and even offered me a slice of the business itself. This just made me more determined to leave, as not 6 months previous the business had become a Ltd company, and at that time they had the ideal opportunity to include me as a Director.

These are strange times. Earlier in the year, my wife 'survived' redundancy. I have since dodged the redundancy bullet, and my wife is now facing it again. All I seem to have done this year is either hear about, or be part of redundancy consultations!

I'm sure that you'll find something else. If it's as bad as I'm thinking, you're as well getting out of there.

You'll see me wandering about in a few weeks time.......

I admire your stance Andy, I genuinely do, and I wish you well and every success in your search for a new and more rewarding role.

However, I'm old enough to have worked in some half-decent organisations and some real s**tholes and, at the end of the day, the only ethos in (commercial) business is business itself. I'm afraid that Gordon Gekko was quite right ... "it's all about money, everything else is conversation."

If you sleep soundly tonight then you have made the right decision!

Good luck my friend!

;)

Andra

Seen you today about 3'ish as you were entering the shop. I was on my regular walk on Byres Road. I was going to tap you on the shoulder and say hello, but I thought you were looking a bit pre-occupied. now I know why.

As we discussed before, why not try and follow your brother in his choice of employment, not much happening right now for any of these 'specialised employers', but as you know, it is a growing market (no matter what they try to tell you) and I cannot see a future shortage of customers in the long / short term ;)

If it is affecting your health, walk!

Good luck mucker and I'll come into the shop have a blether and buy you a coffee before you bow out.

I think, from the little mentioned, that you made the right decision - and it came strongly from inside you. So even more, certainly no regrets.
Best to you and all will be well; you do the right thing now, you will receive good in the future.
