Pre-Shave Oils/Creams/Gels....?

Can anyone recommend a good pre-shave treatment, to soften the beard and offer a little extra protection before lathering up and shaving?

I have just finished my Truefitt oil (excellent) and am coming to the end of my Trumpers Sandalwood Skin Food (also very good), so I'm going to have to re-invest.

I've heard good reviews of Myrsol, but this is Spanish and I'm finding it hard to locate in the UK (do you know where you can get it?).

I'd be glad to hear about folk's experiences with other products, and to receive recommendations.

Thank you, gentlemen.

In the beginning I used T&H oil, but it's not that great in my honest opinion.

Now, and for some months already, I've been using Proraso pre/post. I got the 500ml tub, which actually was on sale at Paul's (Connaught) eBay shop. Few months back he had few tubs that had been damaged (for some reason) and had cracks on the actual plastic container. He put them up for auction just to unload the 'seconds' stock and the one I got cost me about 6 quid excl. P&P (normal price is 18 quid)...

There is also the Proraso pre/post 'white' (aloe vera and tea tree if I'm not mistaken), this is almost the same but for more sensitive skins. The original pre/post ('green') stings more, the menthol/eucalyptus element there is much stronger.

I now have another product, Italian as well, the Santa Maria Novella pre/post creme. This is a $60 for 100ml porcelain jar, pomegranate thick creme, lovely stuff. I use it as after shave creme, does magic with the -4 deg. C we have here these days. Too expensive though to be used as pre, me thinks...

Regarding Myrsol, Gifts & Care stocks it, they carry almost all the Myrsol range, 180ml bottle is about 12 Euros. The Myrsol pre/post balm is (reportedly) the most popular product in Spain. I'll PM you if I finally decide to place an order with them just in case you want a bottle of it, I'll most likely have free delivery with the order I may place.

Thanks for that! Would I be right in thinking that, of the products shown on Gifts & Care, the pre-shave oil would be the 'Antesol Massage' 180ml?

I wouldn't think so. From what I have understood, the pre/post is the "Emulsion", the stuff that is balm-like and it appears to be the only such product they have on offer.
It is a pre-shave balm that reportedly really loosens the facial hairs and allows three rounds (WTG, XTG & ATG) without any kind of rash or burn...

The other products are 'regenerating skin', 'tonic' (Formula "K") and skin preservation lotions, most of them 'water' based.

Have a look at the Myrsol web page, though it does not say that much more.

The 'Antesol' is described here:

and the 'Emulsion', here:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.giftsandcare.com/en/catalog/the-pleasure-of-shaving/myrsol/myrsol-emulsion.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.giftsandcare.com/en/catalog/ ... lsion.html</a><!-- m -->

Both seem to be pre/post shave products? So far as you know, it's the Emulsion that's the one everyone raves about?

I visited the Myrsol web site and translated the description of each of their products in Google. The "Emulsion" is the only pre/post product in balm form, similar to other products we are used to. The other "massage" products Myrsol has in their lineup are either water based 'massage' oils or pure water based lotions, and should not be of 'balm' texture.

Regarding my mention that the "Emulsion" is reportedly the most popular of Myrsol's products in Spain, yes, this is what I meant. I read this over at a thread in B&B today, was written by one who lives in Spain.

I suppose our Spanish friends, members of TSR, could easily answer or clarify further. I PMed a fellow TSR member earlier today asking for clarification, having seen him taking part in a B&B thread where Myrsol was mentioned, but by (my) mistake he is Portugese and not Spanish and apparently is not that familiar with Myrsol products...

Guess I should have tried asking Teiste or Jose straight from the beginning on this.

next time you are in a super market pick up a bottle of glyceine on the baking aisle, I've used it a s preshave quite successfully and its cheap. Also its great to add to a lather to make it a bit slicker.

Thanks for those suggestions, gentlemen. Plenty of food for thought there.

N_Architect - I'll definitely be investigating the Myrsol Emulsion further. I'll have a word with a Spanish colleague today, and see what she knows about it.
