For y'all info, guys.

PAO (Period after opening) is only required if there is a shelf-life of more than 30 months since manufacture. Therefore, it's 'only' 12 months since opening the package. That being said, during testing of PAO, the fail criteria can be on microbial activity, degeneration of packaging, degeneration of product (smell), degeneration of product (visual), and degeneration of product (performance).

Although it's a legal obligation to have a factually determined PAO or shelf-life, it all depends on how picky you are in terms of using slightly degenerated products - for example the crusty/rusty Cella block aforementioned which still performs as if it was made yesterday.

We're obliged by law to have to display the 'period after opening' symbol and the 12 months is our chemists assessment as to how long the soap will "stay good" for. That said, I have prototype Phoenix and Beau soaps that are well over two years old and they're going great guns .

I load mine straight from the puck after blooming. Works right first time. Picking some out for the bottom of a bowl or scuttle seems wasteful to me.
