Hi guys - been wet shaving for years - but sadly it's been using the extortionately priced Gillette or Wilkinson Sword kit - and it all ends now...

Recently got interested in DE razors on another forum and so found my way here. I've still to experience a DE shave I'm embrassed to say - I currently have two Gillettes on their way from fleabay (a super speed & slim adjustable) and can't wait to get started. I've already stocked up on a few essentials like Alum block, feather blades & Arko soap sticks so I'm hoping to a huge improvement over my old routine.

Always suffered from a "beard" since my late teens - even when I have a shave I still look like I need one (dark hair plus pale skin is a curse I tell you), wet shaving is the only thing that seems to last. My wife bought me pretty expensive electric shaver a few years back and if I'm forced into an electric shave I usually need 2 a day... :icon_cry2:

I'm also quick picky about what products I put on my skin - had eczema since birth, and this might sound wierd, but I can tell if I'm allergic to something by sniffing it; a nice creamy smell is great, a chemical smell is a no-go - so any advice from other souls with sensitive skin would be most welcome.

Anyways - better sign off now, my wife might think there's something funny going on if I watch anymore more youtube video's of men shaving...

Hi, no need to be embarrassed, there's a first time for everything. If you've watched a few videos you should be ready to go now, just take it easy on your first go and there shouldn't be any bloodshed.

Watch those feathers, they can cause irritation for some (me included) so if you get a rash, it might be the blade. You'll probably be okay, just something to be aware of.

I have dark tough beard hair too, but you'll probably find that after a couple of months DE shaving your skin will be in better nick and if you want to, you'll be able to have an evening shave as well (if you're going out maybe) without ill effects.

Welcome!

Welcome! Watch and follow the Youtube videos from Mark Herro (mantic59), except the way he casually swirls his brush on the cake of soap for 5 seconds and somehow generates a lather, which seems almost impossible for us mere mortals.

Hello and a Warm Welcome to TSR....

I too have sensitive skin.......coupled unfortunately with whiskers like steel wire.....

I know we all do it...but try not to go over the same area with the razor several times without re-soaping...even if its just a smear of foam with your fingers to lubricate a bit you've missed.....I find it helps keep the razor burn at bay...
You might give Palmolive soap a go...I know its cheap and doesn't have the worlds best perfume...but it has very good lubricating properties.....

I too used to have problems with Eczema when I was younger....and had great problems with overly soapy soap and perfumes of any kind.....palmolive green toilet soap seemed to help....
There's hope....I eventually grew out of it and haven't been troubled with eczema for over twenty years now......

Hi all! I'm new to DE wet shaving (also new to this forum..in-fact new to forums full stop!). I have used a cut-throat but stopped because of cost/time investments! So being a bit of an anti-capitalist I decided to start shaving in the way my Dad did using a DE "Safety" Razor! I have now shunned my "fusion"! I am currently using a Wilkinson "Classic" due to low cost but also have my Dad's Gillette (non description Gillette with Plastic handle in the "Sandwich" design with "Made in England" underneath the head. Any clues to the identification of this razor are gratefully received! Circa 1980ish)

Any tips to make my DE experience top-hole (to use an Edwardian phrase!) would be fantastic!

Many thanks

Socialistphil

Hi Phil, you've inadvertently piggybacked someone else's welcome thread with your question so it might not get full exposure, but I'd guess you might have a Gillette slim twist. Google that and compare pics. If it is a slim twist it's probably nearer 1970-75 ish.

If you don't get many responses here don't be afraid to start a new thread to discuss your razor.
In the meantime, welcome to you too!

Thanks Canuck! A very nice welcome! :icon_razz: Also at the risk of embarassing myself how do I post a "new" post in a thread? Thanks again for your time and knowledge as you hit the nail on the head with the Gillette!

Regards

Hi & very welcome both of you.
Re sensitive skin, as a card carrying member of various skin clinics since the sixties I can recommend glycerine based soaps in my own case at least, not saying they're the best for all conditions.
Two of the best are either Mama Bear's or our own Prof Blighty (Martin) can make you up about as "clean" & non irritant soap as you seek. Drop him a PM.
