Martini's (not apple)

Alot of you are happy to admit to sipping G&T's in your smoking jackets but I'm also happy to admit to enjoying a Vermouth/Martini as an aperitiff.

I've tried the Bond thing, 4 to 5 parts gin to 1 part Vermouth, shaken and just about standing but who the hell can do 5 parts gin?

Any budding mixologists please advise.

Digging out Casino Royale, I find Bond ordering a "dry martini" as follows:

Three measures of Gordon's
One of vodka
Half measure of Kina Lillet
Shaken
Large slice of lemon peel.

I gather that Kina Lillet was more vermouth-like then than now.

The traditional really dry martini involves pouring vermouth over the ice, tipping it away, then pouring gin over the same ice. Any gin drink this strong needs to be freezer-temperature to be enjoyable, imo.

That'll be an oily Martini then. Interesting to look at anyway, but maybe not so tasty. (Have we got a puking smiley?)

I can't do Martini's, I tried once in a vain attempt to be all "Ian Fleming" but I didn't like it one bit. My enjoyment stopped with the ordering, and I think the barman secretly saw right through my prattish attempt to be Daniel Craig for the night.

I do like a Manhattan. And I do mean one... my wife hates the gibbering wreck that her husband turns into when I have four.
