Japanese rice cakes Mochi for New Year

Ok the other half is Japanese and I've had a crack at making mochi which is traditionally eaten at New Year.

Anyone else seen it made or know of any tips which might help the misses is being very vague so I don't know if I'm f****ing it up or not.

I know it's a long shot but thanks in advance.
