Is a close shave actually possible with a single WTG pass?

Therein lies the problem: the "porn star effect". Many people after watching these shave videos feel they don't "measure up" and therefore theorize they need more expensive eqpmt. and an über aggressive razor if not multiple passes. That is not the case. Do what is comfortable and that which does no harm and above all stop "faceturbating" (rubbing your mug like a Greek philosopher). The hair will be back tomorrow and never lose sight of your goal. However, if your goal is simply a BBS shave and modern disposable ctg. razors do that for you w/o irritation & ingrown hairs then you are merely wasting time & money with DE/SE shaving. Many of us are here due to these two aforementioned maladies. Forget the saving money part that some harp about as most here have spent far more on DE/SE shaving.

Also, don't watch shave videos by people trying to sell you something. They are almost always not objective. The same goes for people getting free products to "test".

Agree.

Aside from the above, sometimes YT shaving videos can show technique which can be at times questionable at least; for example I recall seeing someone perform a ATG pass and his face went bright red after doing so.

But I think there is great place for YT shaving channels, they can be fun and a pleasant distraction, but I don't think they should be taken entirely as a means for a tutorial as we all have different needs, there is no one size fits all.

TBH I always feel a bit weird watching shave videos. Obviously the point is to learn, but then I think "what if my buddies knew I spent my evening watching guys shaving?"
I still watch them though, you do learn some stuff and on the whole I don't give a rodent's ring what people think!

I agree with Donnie, Bogeyman et al, there have been times I've thought "are you sure?" or winced at some things I've seen. Not that I'm an expert either mind.

if your missing parts that’s not the plate mate that’s 100% your technique.
Take your time
enjoy
it will all come together

You’re almost certainly right, but I don’t mean missing parts in the sense of totally missing them. I mean certain areas dont get cut down as much as others.

But hey ho I’ve only been using a DE for just shy of 2 years and the Rockwell 6S for 2 weeks, I agree I still need to perfect the technique but am loving this journey so far.

I'm going through a bit of an uncharacteristically clumsy phase at the moment and have had a couple of suboptimal incidents with my straights, but with impeccable timing GordyC's Wilko Classic arrived to save me from myself and I have to say I'm really quite enjoying how easy it is to get a close and comfortable shave with DE. Still needing 3 passes for a DFS result but I'm actually surprised by how much I enjoy the DE thing. More RAD to keep at bay!

Great to hear you’re enjoying the goods and they’re pushing you further down this very deep rabbit hole.

Haha yeah cheers Gordy, yes it's saved me time and some blood, and is more comfy than I expected, but I'm trying to stay out of the rabbit hole! It might have cost me nothing now but I dare say it might do in the long run! How the heck did all this get under my skin? I hardly ever buy anything but I've lost the plot since lockdown and discovering the world of proper shaving! I fairly predict I'll have a Tech or something before the year is out. How is the Classic viewed? I'm using it with the GWS blades you sent (seemed logical). Am I right in thinking this is mild?

Yes @hotmetal very mild. I chose the razor for travel and used it a handful of times, then funnily enough I got a Tech to keep in my travel bag.

I used the Tech a month ago during a trip to Skye and it was a great shave, armed with a Feather blade.

There’s so many variables out there that you can end up with so many blades, razors, pre-shaves, soaps, creams, aftershaves, balms, EdPs, EdTs etc to last several lifetimes.

The main thing is it’s your shave….so do whatever you want, whenever you want, and enjoy it!

For me, the hardest part of getting a good DE shave is just forcing myself to have that habit of going slowly and gently every time. It has to become a proper routine - it is so very easy, even after several years, to be tempted to have "a quick shave" which you just cant do with a DE.

Prep is so important. However you do it, get the facial hair and skin soft and slippery - put the lather on a minute or two before you pick up the razor.

Then go slowly and lightly with that razor - picture a surgeon with a scalpel - hold it with fingertips and set aside 20mins or more for the shave

Then wait before passing judgement - any micro stubble you feel with you fingertips in areas of tight skin will disappear after about 30mins as the hair pulls back.

Shaver / blade / brush / soap choices are very much secondary to the above.

As of late I am only doing one pass WTG shaves and the results are marvelous!! No irritation, no ingrown hairs & with the plethora of anti-aging, i.e., "beauty", products that I implement I can see how well they work much better. Finally, it's so nice to just merely shave and not be obsessed with mowing down every stray whisker. That last bit in & of itself makes shaving more rewarding than many would believe. Like running carefree & naked through the forest!! ;)

There are so many different factors at play, at least for me. My ordinary day to day shave is with a Tech plus eaither a Feather or a Dorco, I generally use a shaving soap and water that is warm and not really that hot. The shave is good but every now and again I think that could have been a bit closer and use a more aggressive razor, I also then take more care. The result is still not perfect, i.e. the skin is not as smooth as my forehead for example buy hey, at the end of the day I am a man and hair grows on my face, it is not as if Margot Robbie is going to come along and check that I have done a good job.

Whatever finish I achieve, for me the very best part of wet shaving is after rinsing off the alum, to run a face cloth under hot water and hold against my face and press gently and place it around the area.
SHEER LUXSHURY!
