Hey Gary,
I'm not sure I'm experienced enough to truly advise but I started DE shaving at the start of this month (Jan) with an Edwin Jagger DE3D14 (I think this shares the same head with the '89 but I'm happy to be corrected).... It came with Derby blades & a book of alum matchsticks as well as the Feathers, and I ordered this sample pack (Sample Pack #1) , all from Shave Lounge.
I initially used the Derby blades and had a reasonable experience. I then switched to Astra SP (a recommended blade which I think is considered moderately sharp) and worked on technique.

This week I switched to the Gillette 7 O'Clock Sharp Edge ....

....and found it an excellent shave and so far no significant nicks (just a weenie one hardly worth the alum). I think I'd have made a bit of a mess, mind you, if I'd started out with this.

I reckon that the Astra SP and Gillette 7o'clock Super-Stainless are on par and you should be, shall we say, less damaged. I'll try my feathers in a month or so, I reckon, by which point I should have technique closer to `good`.

Good luck with joining the edges.
