I recently discovered this balm at a Dermalogica stand from their 'shave' range. The description makes specific reference to minimising ingrown hairs primarily because it contains salicylic acid. It's also known to be good for irritated skin and calming razor burn and is marketed for 'dry skin'.

Can anyone who owns it/has tried it vouch for this product? Picture below for reference:

Had looked up this type of product earlier because of my 12 yr old and found:
Salicylic acid is especially helpful in treating acne because of its ability to penetrate the follicle. It encourages the shedding of dead skin cells from within the follicle, helping keep the pores clear of cellular debris.
Sounds like it would work as a wash or preshave.

Salicylic acid is basically aspirin. You'll find it in most if not all ingrown hair treatments these days. In very high concentrations it's used to treat the skin for warts.

You are right in that it is unusual to find it in an after-shave product and that's one reason why I started this thread. It sounds/looks good on paper but I was hoping for feedback as to how good it is from the wet shaving community. The reviews online from various shops are generally very good and positive, but I can only assume these people are "average Joe's" that don't use wet shaving products to the extent that might (e.g. shaving soaps/creams, razors/blades, etc)

Looks bloody expensive......

Not really. The prices seem to vary quite dramatically. If you look around you can find it for £16 online (I'm not going to post a link to that here). Of course I'm not going to pay the recommended price, which is a rip-off. For comparative purposes I get my regular balm, Roger & Gallet, for £10-11 delivered to my door for a 75ml tube.

I use it, but I've never suffered from ingrown hairs so I'm afraid I can't help with that. What I will say is that it is an excellent moisturiser and post-shave soother, especially good if over-enthusiasm or carelessness leaves you with razor burn. It is a light, almost translucent balm that seems to 'glide' onto the skin and is readily absorbed. No need to rub it in, which is good news if your skin is irritated. A little goes a long way. It has no scent, so will be very different in that respect to Roger & Gallet products. We all have our opinions on what constitutes expensive: I would put it towards the expensive end of a spectrum that starts with products that cost just £2 or £3.

I also use Dermalogica moisturiser, which provides SP15. It, too, is not cheap. But it is very good.

Hope that helps a bit.

All the best,

Chris

Chris you're a star for posting that. It was very helpful! I think it's definitely going to be worth a try although I have other stuff to use up.

The R&G is god but I'm beginning to think the light menthol in it is giving me just a slight burn sensation in the colder months so I may ease off it until the summer or spring. The scent is very light mind you and is all but gone in 30mins.

You're very welcome. I just hope that if you try it you like it. If you find a discounted source of Dermalogica perhaps you would let me know. I thought that while I was in the States recently I might be able to get it more cheaply (as I expect you know, it is an American product) but it costs virtually the same as here. What is more, they only sell through specialist outlets so you can't just walk into Boots or wherever to stock up.

All the best,

Chris

Hi,

I'm a little late to this one but I was glad to see this stuff get a good reference. I was given this as a present about 3 years ago and in 20 years I've never had as good as ASB before or since.

I should say that I don't suffer from ingrown hairs so I can't speak specifically to your question. Glad to recommend this balm though - it is spendy, but excellent.

Thanks, Coler. Better late than never!

I managed to get 4 samples from a SA. I've used two so far and the results weren't so good on my sensitive/dry face. I have been in an office though where the air con has been playing up. The humidity is about 20% and it's causing my face to dry up and cause complications, so I am not blaming the balm...

I hope the situation here improves as this is not making things good for shaving at all!

Hmm not great.

I forget to say, eejit that I am, I will always use a moisturiser after I use this balm. Now, that's just force of habit for me, but it occurs to me that maybe this is a necessary step especially if you have dry skin.

I use the Dermalogica 'daily defence' [lets call it 'DEFENCE' so men won't mind using it...] or GFT Skin Food. Lately I've been using the skin food more and more and I find it very good. If anything, my skin would be on the slightly dry side naturally.

Good luck with it.

I'm also starting to use moisturiser after my balm. Today I had to throw on some Nivea Creme, which has been working great after the shave. I previously used it as a general moisturiser morning and night on days that I didn't shave.
