Cover Versions

Any cover of any Bob Dylan song is better than the Dylan version.

Listen to The Byrds' version of Tambourine Man, and then listen to the Dylan version.

The Byrds' version is quite lovely, whereas the Dylan version sounds like it's being performed by a Donkey being raped by a vacuum cleaner.

I seem to remember us having this conversation, and I'm with you all the damned way. Talented songwriter, shame about the voice.

I have a real weakness for rocked-up versions of cheesy pop songs. Consider, if you will, the likes of:

Gun, Word Up
Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa, Hit Me Baby One More Time

Firewind, Maniac:

Or perhaps Sargant Fury (bonus points for actually having a video:

And of course:

Hey, Ian, fancy a band project? ;)

Not really sure if it is better, but I love the Joey Ramone version of Wonderful World. I love the original too!

Some covers work & some don't.

For example Bauhaus' version of Ziggy Stardust was every bit as good as Bowie's, and Neil Young's All Along the Watchtower, The Cult's Born to be Wild and The Presidents of the United States of America version of Video Killed the Radio Star were every bit as good as the original.

Generally, I've really struggled with Dylan covers - IMHO they're almost always never as good as Mr Zimmerman's dulcet tones (Mr Tambourine Man being one example for me I'm afraid, another would be the Animals' House of the Rising Sun); but then I am very partial to early Dylan.

Some just don't work at all. Atomic Kitten's Eternal Flame is a prime example of this fo me.

One you'll know about Mick: Dead Kennedys doing Rawhide (Viva Las Vegas as well now I think about it). Inspired, I'd say.

Indeed Andy, I'm also rather partial to 'She's not there' as covered by the UK Subs.

Agree that Hendrix's 'All along the Watchtower' is the mutts nuts, although I prefer Dylan's 'Tambourine Man' over that happy-clappy-hippy Byrdshite version.

Am eagerly awaiting the winner of next years X-Factor when they cover Crass' 'Screaming Babies!'

'Screaming Babies!''Screaming Babies!''Screaming Babies!''Screaming Babies!''Screaming Babies!''Screaming Babies!''Screaming Babies!''Screaming Babies!''Screaming Babies!''Screaming Babies!''Screaming Babies!'

Yes. It was in The Salisbury in Manchester. I think his version of Tambourine Man came on the Juke Box which sparked the conversation.

That would be, at the very least, entertaining :)

Yeah...love that Clash version...I could easily bore this thread to death with reggae covers or Hendrix covers...oops.

A friend bought me this CD as a joke....he didn't expect me to quite like it.
