Contradictions?

Shwmae pawb - Alright all,

As I embark on my voyage into straight razor shaving I have posed myself with a number of questions. One which currently stands out to me is "what is my aim with a shave?". I've seen a number of comments along the lines of 'I am baby-bum smooth', or similar, as well as 'you're aiming for hair reduction not hair removal', and 'you're aiming for a clean look' so I pondered...

How can the phrases not contradict? If they do contradict, which is your take on a shave? Do you aim for a super-smooth touch or do you end up like some 320-grit wet & dry but clean-looking?

I have personally been aiming for the 'smooth' approach. I enjoy a hairless feeling (on parts of my face and neck, at least) even if it is fleeting. However, I believe that has ended up causing me issues as I'm striving to feel smooth and, resultantly, am heavy-handed or too involved for a beginner. I, personally, will try a lighter touch and a que sera sera approach for my next shave.
