Clutch Judder on Astra "H"

Got an Astra Sport Hatch back in November 2007 on a 57 Plate, i have only done 9750 miles from new and the car has developed a judder on the clutch when cold & pulling away in 1st gear, only does it for a few mins and then it stops, my mate said it could be water warping the cluth plate and then when the clutch gets heat into it after a few mins, it's sorting itself out ?

Anybody have an astra or a Vauxhall that suffers with this ?or any car that has suffered this ?, the car is still under warranty for another three weeks   (just in time) it's booked into the Heathrow main Vauxhall Dealer, but i know from past dealings, they can be a bit slippery

a clutch shouldn't wear out after 10,000 miles should it ?, (i'm not a boy racer, so no racing starts or thrashing has occured), i am hoping they will just replace the Clutch if it's that, under warranty...

Most likely a pressure plate or thrust bearing, neither are easy to do so they will try to wriggle out of it. If it was moisture it would only have happened once, usually after sitting for a few days or after exceptional rainfall. When the clutch is coming up and allowing the friction material to meet the flywheel it is not a smooth movement so you feel this as a judder.

If it has sat for a long time it could be the friction material itself but my money is on the thrust bearing/pressure plate.

Edit- thinking about it if it only does it for a few minutes it is more likely the thrust bearing, if it was the friction material it would continue doing it. Either way it would be best if they just bought a new clutch kit and replaced it but I suspect they will try to go for just the bearing.

Common problem, raise hell with Vauxhall, make sure that on the booking sheet (which you should get a copy of) they mention the clutch judder.
That way, you have a dated piece of paper which shows the problem occurred before the end of warranty.

You might need to take it up with Vauxhall UK, but tell them you know it's a common problem, and if they don't sort it you'll contact the consumerist, or whatever the UK equivalent is.

I had a Audi A3 that did this, it was a warped friction disc.

That had almost 90k miles and the clutch was far from worn when i took the gearbox off. Someone must have caused the damage on the way to the auction or something.

Luckily it was fixed for next to nothing. You should contact your dealer ASAP.

i would guess along the same lines as audio

but i grew up a blue oval man and everything vauxhall made the Ford equivilant was better

Cheers Chaps,

pisses me of coz it looks like Vaux know but unless you complain when they try to avoid repairing it , they won't do anything, hope the dealer doesn't try and get out of it, they did well out of me, they had a nice part ex off me and i had £3000 worth of extras on that car (body kit, better wheels, built in sat nav, leather, sport interior pack etc etc)

Have you allowed a woman to drive it?

yeah

My GF likes to drive it when we go out and when she goes to see her sister in bournemouth as it's quite quick and nice to drive !

if the service rep at the dealership tries to get out of it, this shall be my response :

If you want to have a case, send a nice letter to head office (even before going to the garage), recorded delivery of course. (worth a couple of quid)
That way, if shit hits the fan, you've got proof that's a "pre-existing" condition, don't get shafted on this one, it might be expensive to fix..

Oh I see, known issue with the friction plate, didn't know about that one.

Usually with the known issues they have their stories already set from turning droves of people away. You may need to just stand firm and tell them you are handing the car back unless they fix it (if bought recently)

By the sound of it they gave you a months warranty? if so don't waste any time, it is common practice is to flim flam you till you are out of warranty then claim it is a wearable part and not covered and so on.

Good luck mate

no not a months warranty, the full three years, bought from the dealers brand spanking new with 6 miles on the clock back in November 2007, Warranty runs out on the 21st of this month.... :D

Will see what they say first, to be fair the dealership used to be pants but then the franchise was taken over just before i bought my car and since then they have been good as gold... we will see, just wanted to hear your thoughts on the matter before i go in there, i am quite good at getting what i want in these type of situations... ;)

we will see

Probably just as well that you look a bit like Tony Gandolfini then M8 ! Don't bother shaving the morning you pop in to see them & work on that kinda scarey black Greek look. The Greek security guy at the private club in Sauchiehall St used to scare the pants offa me ..........
