I have been using a bestshave.net #5 as my travel option for ages but the handles starting to split and it's shedding a bit. I had 3 more on order 1 to replace the travel brush and 2 to pass on as halfway brushes to a couple of workmates that I'm starting out on the DE route ( these break in lovely for newbies - a world better than the wilkiies that they all seem to buy ). Anyhow they never arrived (Had to chase through Paypal) and I'm loathe to use the supplier again, the gear is good and it's pretty low cost but the Turkish postal system leaves a lot to be desired. Finally getting to the question :). Is there anything for a similar price - under a fiver that will be as good ?

I'm very happy with my Bodyshop synthetic for travelling. It also has the important advantage that it dries very quickly as well. Not much fun having a smelly damp badger funking out your travel bag.

I have tried the body shop but I'm afraid its not for me.The brush I mentioned in OP is a cracker of a little brush albeit boar. Am curious about the Chinese options but have no experience with them.

Cheap boars I've used that work well...

The shaving factory brush is tiny but a great face latherer and softens nicely. Mine hasn't shed much either. I put some Danish oil on the untreated handle.
The vonel, well they come in different sizes. They soften great and have nice painted handles, except the 2 smallest. They're great for the money.

Is it just me, or does the little brush on the far left, look like it's growing out of an old cotton reel? ;)

Ooh that looks promising. In fact it looks vary similar to a little culmak that I've got somewhere might actually try that for travelling and maybe some vonels for passing on.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Grosvenor 404 Mixed. Great performer, cheap and not too much of an issue if it needs replacing. Alternatively you could source your own knot to your preferred spec and get one of the talented brushmakers to turn a handle and set the knot. Another option would be one of the cheaper Omega boar brushes. It really depends what you want from a brush whilst travelling I guess.

As I always use at home my boar semogue 1305 I decided that my travel cheap one would have to be a badger. A cheap and efficient one is the wilkinson you can get in general stores here in Spain. It works really well and I got it for about £10 a few months ago.
