Case soap dish - corrosion?

Hi chaps,

I've been using my cade soap dish (the metal one) with proraso. I recently got to the end of the soap and noticed that the dish has corroded on the inside.

It's no big deal as I can still use it but I know it will do my head in!

Anyone else's dish on here suffered with this?

I thought the Cade dish was aluminium?

It is! But looks like its oxidised rather than corroded.

Aluminium doesn't like either acid or alkaline. I don't know what the pH of Proraso is, but odds-on it's one way or the other from neutral.

I would think all soap-based shaving preparations will be distinctly alkaline tending to form aluminium hydroxide in contact with aluminium. The hydroxide will dissolve slowly, leaving pitting. Although I don't think there is suppossed to any free hydroxide left in soaps, there is bound to be a tiny bit.

I had the same thing contacted l'occitane who said send it to them to look at they then sent me a new bowl. Said they had never known this to happen before. Looking online I wasn't the first or last by the sounds of things. The new bowl seems to be a different metal, seems lighter. Is you bowl an old one or fairly recently bought?

I think it must be an older one but it is less than a year old.

Good call on the email to them. They will be sending a new one out upon receipt of my bowl.

There's a thread about this from a good while back. I seem to remember that Fido was involved, maybe even started it. The upshot is that the 'new' bowl doesn't do it.

I haven't used my new bowl since it arrived month ago still wrapped up in the cupboard with a new sealed puck of Cade in it.
