Buying a second hand Kindle

I'm about to put my toe in the water and buy a basic Kindle.

If I buy second hand, do I get to keep any books the previous owner might have left on it?
Or when I register it in my name does all that get whizzed away by Amazon?

All advice gratefully accepted

Just a guess, but I would assume on a newer model kindle that uses amazons cloud service, you would lose access to the books when you sign into a new account. As they are linked to your amazon account, technically you don't own the books(or thats what it used to be, there was a huge row about it a year or two ago).

Non-amazon books, files manually loaded on via computer would likely remain(unless he factory resets)

Anyway, it is more likely the seller will factory wipe and deactivate the device from his account to stop you buying books courtesy of his bank :D
