Are you as angry as Hugh?

It's another of Hugh's crusades. If you don't like Hugh's crusades, you won't like the show. If you want to learn of the absurdities going on in the oceans that surround this sceptered isle, if you want to be more informed about where your fish come from and how the seas are fished, if you are interested in provenance and responsible stock management, then you might find it worth a watch.

Granted it is Hugh's view, and there will be other views, but chances are you will be more informed than you were previously.

It's on Wed and Thur nights too.

I was surprised battered mackerel "seemed" to go down well but I think that might be his only victory as this has been going on for decades and fish aren't cute or fluffy.

You're right. A chicken drumstick may have tendons and gristle, a pork chop may have a thick layer of fat, but seafood has eyes and bones and scales and tubes...

It's a shame, because some of my most memorable meals have been from the sea. I would prefer to cook and eat fish over meat any day of the week. But then, I'm a drummer also.

I mean't by the fluffy cute remark that the public won't get engaged or enraged simply because they are fish and not foxes.

Did you see The End of the Line on More 4. Even scarier.

A great book by Mark Kurlanski might be of interest.

What really depresses me is that, in order to make seafood more acceptable on a general level, humanity has invented "crab sticks":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crab_stick

IMHO, these things really are an abomination of the highest order. I'm not talking about fishfingers, the breadcrumb-covered white fish snack, by the way. I'm talking about the dyed pink horrors that look more like seaside rock (candy) than anything else. If there really are people out there who would rather eat these things than true seafood, then I pity them.

Maybe...I suspect though as with most heavily processed food products they are just using what ever's left of the fish after it has been filleted.
A sort of mechanically recovered fish bits compressed into a handy morsel...

I've never had them, at least it says they're made from Alaskan pollock which is probably sustainable. I'm not too concerned that people eat these I just wish they call them fish sticks.

PM sent. I'm pretty sure it's among the 3,000 books here.

Thanks for the PM, Ollie, much appreciated.

Just watched episode 2 of HFW and am outraged again. Not a huge fan of Greenpeace myself, but top marks for getting that bloke to say "dolphin"... haha I can imagine Tescos exec screaming "NOOOOOOOO!" at the TV set.

Didn't see tonight's episode but I'm with Dawkin's on dolphins or maybe it was Rich Hall.

"Dolphins are just lucky to be born with a smile"...
