Alum block not stinging?

Hey guys,

I'm pretty new to the DE safety razor. I have been using it for maybe a month and a half. I managed to nick myself, so I applied the alum block to my face and no sting. The first time I used the alum block after I nicked myself it stung... What's changed?

You either have a different alum block or you didn't nick yourself as much the second time (or you applied it later than you did the first time).

Probably the reason is that even though you nicked yourself the rest of the shave was better and smoother so you had nothing to cause stinging, apart from the nick.

Presuming you're moistening the alum prior to application, it suggests that your shaves are very good; there's no damage for the alum to hit, so the tingling is diminished or non-existant.

The only thing I have really changed (other than the quality of shave) is the blades. I'm currently using feathers.
