Advice on a straight razor purchase.

Hi all, after much pondering i have decided to take the plunge into the world of straight razor shaving, i have experimented a little with a cheap shavette just to see if i could manoeuvre the thing around my face with out losing a load of blood, and i can! My first idea was to upgrade to a better shavette, a Feather or Kai, but i know me and i won't be entirely happy until i have a proper straight razor so i've decided to skip that step and put the money into a proper straight.

Now this won't be my primary means of shaving, i don't have the time in the mornings, and my budget is quite limited, but there does seem to be some well priced razors on reputable vendors websites, i just want to make sure that i'm not wasting my cash. With that said i've found the below razors:

https://www.executive-shaving.co.uk/product.cfm/product_id/7968

https://www.executive-shaving.co.uk/product.cfm/product_id/4342

https://www.executive-shaving.co.uk/product.cfm/product_id/7355

and this strop:

https://www.executive-shaving.co.uk/product.cfm/product_id/5943

With any of those razors and the strop will set me back about the same as a Feather shavette, is anyone of those head and shoulders above the others? or any that i should particularly avoid?

Any other advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

For those prices you could get a very good, truly shave-ready SR (straight razor) from our resident straights expert @Fergiebilly. I've had one from him and I think 4 others honed by him and they cannot be beat. He'll also advise you as to the best place to purchase a paddle strop from, as it's easier to use for a beginner than a hanging strop. I've also used the paddle strop in question and it's a great little item. It also gives you an appreciation for contact surfaces as you can use it closer to your face than a conventional strop, without risk.

I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed with one of Billy's offerings! :) In fact, for the price of one of those razors you listed, he's sold two vintage straights with room to spare for the paddle strop! That's not to say he'll have anything at that price-point now, but he should have something well within budget. :)

Good luck! :D

Hi,
It's great to read that you are going to start straight shaving! It's very comfortable and a great skill to have in the bank.

Contact @Fergiebilly for a straight.
All his razors will be shave ready and he will have something to suit your budget.

Executive shaving is a fantastic website but the straights won't be shave ready even if they say they are.

I have been straight shaving and barbering for 13 years and @Fergiebilly edges are spot on!

Hope this helps and have fun with it!

Great minds!

Wow, thanks for the quick responses. In reading the threads here i had seen Fergiebilly's name crop up quite a few times, but being a newbie i wasn't sure if an approach would be welcomed.

Payday is still a week and a bit off (i always spend in my head in advance!) when the funds are available i'll drop him a PM. I'm not in a huge rush so will be prepared to wait a while if necessary.
