A sticky on Badger Brushes?

Hi all. I've only ever used cheap boar bristle brushes (most expensive is Boots Men-U at <£10), and part of my shaving-related disorder has led me to think about getting a badger brush at Christmas.
I've never really been 'into' brushes (you can tell!) but some of that has to be because I don't know anything about them - especially badgers as the most popular by far.

If it's not rude to ask without contributing to it myself (at least until I know anything worth contributing), how about it? I imagined an introduction for someone like me (there must be others?) who are interested but know very little?

What is the loft? Is it the combined width of the bristles?
What difference does the size of the knot make?
What are the different types of badger hair? (I think I've heard 'pure', 'best', but what are the benefits of each?
I've seen badger brushes for £100+ and for £10 on Amazon (through the link on here).
Maybe some gratuitous shots of people's collections, too?

Does this sound ok?

Good idea, I'd have thought a brush guide sticky including all hair types would be beneficial.

Wait for Rev-O to publish his article and then nick it if not I'm sure some of the currently available badger hair guides can be "adapted". Matters of size, loft, shape et all can be sorted in a paragraph or two, personal brush porn I'd leave out.

Good to hear. Instead of the p0rn, what about photos of the different types of hair and handle variations (if handles are more than aesthetic/gripping comfort???)

I've moved on since publishing this and it needs updating but there's much here that should still be of interest. Early posts include information which deals with some of the questions in th OP.

I'm no expert on brushes but what I found worked for me was to buy inexpensive brushes first in boar, badger, and horse. See what each works best with and then go up from there, they won't go to waste as they'll be part of your rotation.

Well, a succinct sticky on the various types of hair as described by the different makers would be very worthwhile I'd say. For the other stuff a link to Fido's brush blog covers pretty much everything.
