soap vs cream

yes but there are also shaving gods who say a feather blade and a future set on max, can barely get through a 1 day stubble, but can get a fusion cart head to last 40 shaves or more.

I get enough lather from a almond sized dollop of TOBS to cover Belgium. The same almond sized dollop of Executive Shaving Co Natrual Shaving cream is good for 3 passes and a bit of a tidy.

My two Proraso creams produce vastly different volumes with the green producing far more than the red.

When I used the Palmolive, it took 2 almond sized dollops to get barely enough for 2 passes.

I've got to improve my technique. The mounds of lather I seen in SOTD photos makes my efforts look futile. I get enough for a nice shave, usually, but nothing compared to the lathermeisters. :(
To be fair mate, as others have said, what gives you the best shave for you is your perfect lather.

To add to the debate, I would mention that your water supply can also affect your lather.
Hard water vs soft water.
What soap works well, and gives a great lather, for other people may be no good for you depending on where you live.

Creams and soaps are extremely cheap on a per shave basis. Even the more expensive ones.

To get your lathers going, get hold of a stick of palmolive for 50p. Or a tub or tube of proraso. Then use shitloads of the stuff until you have an enormous mountain of lather. It will have used up a few pence of product, but you will be able to get a feel for the process more easily.

if your use twice or thrice as much product as actually needed to make lather, then its not going to be low cost.

however some soaps are not the greatest based on skin type.

If you get 50 shaves out of a 50p stick of Palmolive normally, then that's 1p per shave. If you double the cost per shave, that's 2p a shave.

Sure, it's more expensive, but it is still pretty damn cheap. It's not something I suggest doing in perpetuity, but I feel a lot of newbies should throw caution to the wind early on and give themselves the chance to get a big lather going on by using plenty of product. They can work backwards from there. As time goes on, they will get better at it and maybe need less.

with some soaps and creams, you can use a whole 150 gram tub or tube or puck on a single morning shave, and you will have the same crappy performance as you can get from a piece the same size as a no 2 pencil eraser.
