WTG/XTG/ATG or a different order?

I've noticed that I tend to get a better, closer shave if I do it in 'with the grain / against the grain / across the grain' order rather than the accepted 'with the grain / across the grain / against the grain'.

Anyone else find this? What's your preferred order?

I never think much about grain direction. I just go down, up and across with slight variations of direction which I have learned are effective over the years.

I'd have to be a contortionist to follow the grain slavishly, so it tends to be down, across, up, more or less. Things get a bit more complicated either side of the neck where I never go against the grain anyway.

I always go WTG / XTG / ATG tho if im on a shave after a few days roughing it ill often do WTGx2 just to thin it down a little more.

I can't see any physical reason why those passes in that order would give you a better shave but if you have thoroughly shaved ATG on the second pass you really shouldn't need a third XTG pass.

Shaving ATG is usually the main cause of irritation so it's left till last when the beard is at it's shortest, if it works for you fine but if you can get an irritation free shave in a couple of passes I know what I would do.
