Now that's just plain bloody insulting...but he does have quite a close shave...what kind of balm do you think he's using?
Been there, done that, got the T-shirt (Have to agree about the 2014 re-formulation though...don't get me started!)I really don't know what's happened to the esprit de corps on this forum. I think dogsmro is the closest to diagnose the real problem, which is a lack of a decent pre-shave oil.
This will sort your shave out, but do try and get a can from before the 2014 re-formulation (glad we've finally got over that drama guys).

OK JohnnyO was at least trying to be constructive...but Dave, your hard water suggestion makes me feel like I'm being patronised now...and to think I came here for help(BTW...what would you suggest to get a good lather with hard water?)
Well they do say that every good house needs strong foundations and the foundation to your shave is the prep. That cif stuff is letting you down badly; just when you need a shave ready face you put all those artificial scents and additives on it. What you need is this:Here's my current setup...

Ok, the Cif cleaner exfoliates well and I thought would make a reasonable pre-shave. the Asda washing up liquid provides a slick soap when applied with my oversized brush, followed by 4 or 5 passes with the Kukri blade. I complete with a splash of De-solve it (very citrus, so I thought it would make the ideal post-shave astringent)...I then apply a light rub of the washing up liquid as a post shave balm.

PS Once you're comfy using the ammonia, try mixing things up a bit by adding a drop or two of Domestos - when those two get together the scent is to die for.
Apparently this stuff is very slick providing excellent cushioning. So I've heard.
I hope this isn't too effete a suggestion but, in high summer, this hero product makes a light aftershave splash. A distinctive scent, I grant you, but as long as men still insist on buying Pinaud Lilac Vegetal, you cannot be the worst smelling man out there.

LolAbsolutely spot on...it's called 'My breath smells like the Pope shat in it' syndrome...I have it; however a shave routine doesn't really help the breath.
