Utterly compelling - glad I stuck with it!Just finished 'A Foreign Country', a spy thriller by Charles Cumming. It was pretty decent - enough for me to order another of his books.
I've jsut started 'The Revenant', 'the book that inspired the film' - I'm not sure just yet if it's my cuppa tea!
Great stuff gents...the good thing is that I could probably restart the series again from scratch in a few years time. Will be onto the last one soon then it will be time to decide what series to start next.Maybe Morse.I love them, I read the back in the 90ies and recently decided to read them again. I'm really enjoying them. My favourites so far are the 1st, 3rd and 5th. 4 is also excellent. They are quite different to Hornblower and some of the other Naval authors. Hornblower and the others (I also love the Hornblower books by the way) act and behave like modern people transplanted to the late 18th century. Aubrey and Maturin talk, think and behave like 18th century men. They are also imperfect and feel like real humans, not heroic paragons.
Enjoy!
Just starting Brighton Rock - it's been on my 'to read' list for a while
I recently got a collected works of RLS on Kindle and thoroughly enjoyed revisiting them. Made it through Kidnapped, The Master of Ballantrae, Treasure Island and The Black Arrow before I had to change pace. All of them are corkers and though the style and language are of their time the tales are still fresh. The Black Arrow took me back to my early teens in a delightfully nostalgic way.going through the classics on Gutenberg. I guess they're classics for a reason.
