I'm reading Perdido Street Station by China Mieville. It's pretty mad and very enjoyable. Reminds me a little of Gormenghast in that the city/castle is a character in itself. I had a search to see if anybody had mentioned this book here and Dr Rick has read it. From his post I discovered that it was on the 2002 Hugo shortlist, pipped by American Gods.

I really enjoyed the first one "The Blade Itself" and started out enjoying that one but didn't finish it in the end, I got to the point where I didn't really give a toss about any of the characters, always the death knell!
