What are you reading at the moment?

I’m not the most enthusiastic reader - I think reluctant reader is a good fit - but I’m trying hard to read more. I enjoy history and have been recommended these easy reads by a friend. There seems to be a fair series worth. Am enjoying so far.

Have you heard of Wojtek the bear? This is one of the most heat warming stories I have come across relating to World War Two. All true, and if you enjoy reading about military history - this is a remarkable tale. One of my favourite lines that relates to Polish soldiers who found themselves in the Scottish Boarders in 1946:

"Living in limbo, as they were, Wojtek's presence did much to lift their spirits. In 1946, billeted in postwar rural Scotland, they were stateless, homeless and penniless; the only things they owned were a few meagre possessions in a bag - and a bear"

His statue in Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh.

Didn't know about Wojtek, but had gotten curious a few years back about animals that had been the subject of statues, after seeing the one of Fungie the Dolphin in his 'hometown' of Dingle. There were probably more that I read about at the time, but one I remember was the dog in Japan who kept up the routine of going to the train station every day to wait for his owner, for years after his owner had passed on. Having grown up in a pet-free home, it took me way too long to realise how awesome animals are.

Moving onto my third Edward Marston. Nice and leisurely reading and also trying some of these. We have two copies of this so I borrowed one and had a go. Strangely addictive stuff.
